THE GREENS AND THE CULTURE OF HYPOCRISY

Media release: Greens’ statement on Lahore bombing
Monday, March 28th, 2016
Sen. Scott Ludlum
For the Australian Greens

"Our hearts go out to those impacted by the devastating attack on families celebrating Easter at a public park in Lahore this weekend.

"The killing of around 65 innocent people and the wounding of many more, mostly women and children, is an atrocity.

"For the international community it is an almost overwhelming tragedy, coming so soon after the senseless violence that killed at least 28 people in Brussels and 41 in Baghdad.

"This shocking demonstration of intolerance highlights the need to cultivate respect for cultural and religious diversity in our communities if we are to live together in peace.

"At a time when peace and security are under threat around the world, we must come together to address the causes of conflict and ensure the perpetrators of these terrible acts are brought to justice.

"Senator Scott Ludlam
Acting Leader of the Australian Greens"

Well if that don’t beat all...

“This shocking demonstration of intolerance highlights the need to cultivate respect for cultural and religious diversity in our communities if we are to live together in peace.”

Dear Mr. Ludlum,

You, sir, are a hypocrite, sir!

Your media release is a perfect example of hypocrisy and philosophical bias masquerading as tolerance, rolled into one perfect example of perfunctory pusillanimous claptrap.

Someone detonates an explosive device in a playground, killing 70+ kids and wounding at least 300 other men, women and children and you urge us not to succumb to cultural intolerance.

“We must cultivate respect for cultural diversity if we are to live together in peace”, you preach.

Ah, but if just one crack-addict walks into a 7/11 with an ancient sawed-off shotgun, you call for the immediate marginalisation of every peaceful law-abiding firearms owner in the country, demanding they should all be disarmed for the clear and present threat they pose to the community.

That’s a couple of million innocent Australians you’re more than happy to point your finger at while promulgating a doctrine of intolerance, tarring all with the criminal actions of a very small minority.

That’s a couple of million Australians you’re more than happy to mark out as potential psychopaths just waiting for a chance to commit all manner of atrocity and mayhem.

If a single crazed lunatic walks into a US school and shoots far fewer kiddies than the Lahore bomber managed to kill, you immediately claim every Australian school kid is at risk, unless we get all the guns off the nasty law-abiding gun owners, saying the risk is far too great to act otherwise.

That’s a couple of million people – many Muslims among them – that your party claims the general community should fear and their totally unacceptable hunting culture reject with extreme prejudice.

You embrace the notion that shooters pose an unacceptable risk to the community by their very presence, while denouncing anyone expressing similar fears about Muslims.

Your party is very vocal, both in acknowledging the “guns culture” and promoting intolerance of it, but what you fail to acknowledge, Mr. Ludlum, is the fact that gun culture is a culture of peace.

You refuse to acknowledge that those who use guns for criminal activity are not “real shooters”, but rather disturbed and radicalised individuals who’ve wrongly interpreted both the law of the land and the Shooters Code of Ethics.

Like it or not, Mr. Ludlum, in the same way no Australian could fall victim to gun violence if all guns were removed from the community (The Greens' most ardent wish) likewise no Australia could fall victim to exploding fundamentalists if Islam were banned from the community.

I draw your attention to the following advice sourced from the Oxford Dictionary:

Tolerance

A fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, beliefs, practices, racial or ethnic origins, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.

As the dictionary definition reveals, Mr. Ludlum, one can only demonstrate tolerance towards things one has reservations about.

You and your Greens buddies have no reservations whatsoever toward Islam and so your attitudes toward the Islamic faith, its practitioners and their culture, as claimed in your media release, cannot be termed ‘tolerance’.

While it is true to say not all Muslims are suicide bombers, it is equally true that all suicide bombers are Muslims.

You are offended by cultural gibes levelled at your favoured cultural minorities, while embracing and promoting as lobbying tools, all manner of insulting gibes and epithets employed to promote intolerance and hatred of the hunters’ culture and any other that conflicts with your philosophies.

The truth is, Mr. Ludlum, the ‘tolerance’ you would have the public think you promote, is not tolerance at all.

What you display and promote is nothing more noble than simple and very shallow, self-serving ideological preference.

You claim all hunters kill for fun and for fun alone, not to preserve ancient traditions in celebration of the ancient culture of living off the land and stocking the larder with organic, free-range food and other resources.

When it comes to tolerance of cultures that truly challenge your personal belief systems, you fail, dismally! In fact you demonstrate blind and determined intolerance with every utterance and encourage others to form the same opinion.

You acknowledge Islamic culture and you work tirelessly to promote a reasoned and moderate view of the true nature of the threat posed by those few Muslims who may constitute a threat to the community.

You acknowledge a ‘guns culture’ and you work tirelessly to convince the public that every single adherent constitutes a threat to the community. You call them weekend cowboys, red necks, weekend warriors and killers etc ad nauseam.

Unless of course the hunter is black, in which case you venerate him for preserving his culture and practices against the backdrop of prejudiced white oppression; the very oppression you embrace and promote, provided it’s aimed at white folks.

You would never dream of accusing Australian aborigines of “murdering innocent animals”  for sport, despite the fact few can demonstrate a genuine need to do so in the modern era, and despite the fact they are not restricted to the use of traditional hunting tools, or to hunting only feral species as Europeans are.

Nor do you demand they demonstrate a clear and irrefutable community benefit associated with their hunting, as you do in the case of European hunters.

You simply refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of white European hunting activities, tho’ they are enshrined in thousands of years of culture and tradition.

This is not only intolerant hypocrisy; it is racially motivated and prejudiced intolerance and hypocrisy.

Only when you have learned to acknowledge the legitimacy of cultures you find challenging will you be entitled to call yourself and your party enlightened and ‘tolerant’.

Until that joysome day, you are not well placed to preach the message of tolerance.

Anyway, I'll get outaya way now...
